Troubleshooting

We know that terrible feeling when your HVAC system shuts down and you’re counting on it.  It happens to us too.  And we know that the best solution for you is an easy one that is quick and doesn’t cost you a lot of money.  So here are a couple of ideas that you can take on yourself to try and save a trip.

  1. Change your filter
  2. Change your filter!
  3. CHANGE YOUR FILTER! Hopefully we’re making the point obvious here.  It costs $1.30, and you would be absolutely amazed at the difference it can make.  We’ve saved more calls than we should admit by simply asking the question, “When was the last time you changed your filter?”  While a dirty filter likely won’t shut down your system, if it’s not pushing air the way it normally has, this could be the culprit.
  4. Verify that your breaker hasn’t tripped (for furnace during heating season, for furnace and A/C during cooling season).  Remember the A/C is on a separate breaker from the furnace.
  5. Make sure the furnace doors are locked in place.  If a door is open it will shut the system down.  This is another classic late night call that we have diagnosed at home from our pajamas.
  6. Newer furnaces have a diagnostic light visible through a small clear window on the lower panel.  You can count the blinks and note the color of the light before calling to speed up diagnosis.

Unfortunately, HVAC systems are becoming more like cars, where the electrical system is the driving force, and this list has been getting shorter over the years.  While it has had a negative impact on your ability to troubleshoot, it has had an amazing impact on efficiency and your energy usage.  If you’re still having trouble, we’re always available, with 24/7 emergency service, at 585-454-2120.
